Chapter Thirteen

SHELLY

Shelly’s eyes closed and she inhaled the rich scent of her mocha latte. The warmth through the cup almost too hot on her hands. Such pleasant sensa—

“Are you going to drink that thing or make love to it?”

Ben’s voice cut through her reverie about coffee, and her eyes flew open at his word choice. “I’m totally going to make love to it.”

The tips of his ears turning pink confirmed her zinger hit home. Of course, the flush she felt was a bit more unexpected.

“Do you know what spell you want to do?” He asked the question and turned toward the refrigerator. She watched him move a bunch of items around, but withdraw nothing. Curious.

“I don’t know,” she said slowly. “Maybe I should try a love spell after all.”

That did the trick. Ben spun around, eyes wide. “Not a chance.”

Laughter bubbled out. “I’m just teasing you.”

“Do you want my help?” Ben leaned forward on the island.

“I do,” she assured him, immediately contrite. “I was just trying to break whatever spell had you stuck in the open door of the fridge, rearranging stuff.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“What are friends for?”

“So, in all seriousness…”

“I had an idea for a spell,” she finally answered his earlier question. “But, I’m not sure about it.”

“What could possibly go wrong?”

“After sending Ethan to the emergency room, unable to breathe, and then causing his vision to narrow to pinpricks? Well, I don’t know.” She smirked.

“Let’s hear it, then.”

“What’s happened so far,” she started to recap instead. “My first spell was hit by my misfiring magic and we got the opposite. Trying to enhance feelings of wellbeing with saffron resulted in the opposite physical reaction. Trying to figuratively open his eyes to see what was right in front of him resulted in the loss of his peripheral vision for the day.” She winced.

“What’s wrong?” Ben interrupted her recap.

Tears filled her eyes. “I’m doing this to help Ethan realize his feelings for me before it’s too late, but you should have seen him yesterday, Ben.” She wiped the lone tear that broke free. “He was so scared and confused last night.”

Ben came around the side of the island and gathered her into a hug. “It’s going to be okay. This will work.”

She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, accepting the offered comfort. The familiar sweet yet woody scent of his sandalwood shower gel wafted over her, increasing her sense of belonging. She leaned into the hug, tightening her grip on his shirt. A desire to kiss Ben flared.

What?!

She drew back with a shaky laugh, eyes on her latte. Suddenly, Ben’s nearness provided an entirely different kind of warmth.

“Shelly?” His fingers burned her chin where they gently lifted her face so her eyes met his hooded ones. “What’s wrong?”

“I…”

His fingers caressed her cheek. He leaned in. Her lips parted for the expected kiss. Disappointment surged when she felt a delicate kiss on her forehead.

Ben stepped back. He gave her the crooked smile that she loved. “We should get back to work.”

“Work?”

“On the spell?”

“Right!” She had a goal.
